Reveal Media (in partnership with DOMO) has developed a wireless Body Worn Video solution that is being successfully deployed at this year’s Glastonbury Festival. Avon and Somerset Police is the first Force to use the system and it has already proved to be an extremely useful tool in the prevention and detection of crime.
It has withstood the worst that the Festival weather can throw at it and has been deployed on mounted officers as well as foot patrols. The system comprises of four shoulder mounted cameras with integrated solid state recorders, GPS receivers and encrypted digital transmitters. All four feeds can be viewed at the Police command compound and the officer’s position is mapped onto Google Earth at the same time.
The solution also includes both M3 incident management software and our CARMA archiving and evidence tool.
Superintendent Adrian Coombs said: "I'm really pleased we're using this new system here at the festival, it's another valuable addition to our tools for preventing and detecting crime.
"Police across Avon and Somerset have been using the standard head cams for over a year. Teams in the city centre have found them very useful and they have also been used to tackle anti-social behaviour, domestic violence and public order incidents.
"There are a number of benefits to the new system which downlinks the images and sounds the police officer sees and hears directly back to the police base.
"We can see and hear everything happening at the scene which will help the police officer in command to direct resources and make decisions about policing options.
"It's like having an extra pair of eyes on the street. We also envisage it being very useful for evidence gathering during public order situations, football matches and firearms incidents.
"The system will also be a deterrent to offenders and a reassurance to the general public.
"The force is always looking to improve the service we provide to the communities of Avon and Somerset and the new Body Worn Video Wireless system is a great example of modern technology assisting modern policing.
"Avon and Somerset Constabulary has always prided itself on being a forward looking innovative force and this new system will enhance the capabilities of our force and is another example of the commitment we show to keeping one step ahead of the criminal."
The system is being trialled at the Glastonbury Festival to monitor its feasibility and advantages to policing. The festival is an ideal site for the trial, with large amounts of people, police officers, its rural location and of course, its varied and unpredictable weather! If the system is successful it could be rolled out across the force.
Alasdair Field, Head of Technology, Reveal Media, said: "We are very pleased and privileged to be using this new system for the first time with Avon and Somerset police at the Glastonbury Festival, the largest policing event in the south west."
